It's an origami...thing.
A tetradecagon if my internet research is correct, with 14 sides. The instructions for this came with some origami paper I bought at Uwagimaya's in Seattle. Then I made the tassel and braided hanger with embroidery floss.
You must have incredible dexterity and patience!! I can't tell you how many "simple" origami projects I started and promptly wadded up and threw away in frustration and disgust!! This is beautiful!
Thanks very much! When I first got the instructions to this, I almost gave up, partly cuz it was written in Japanese, until one of the Japanese foreign exchange students at my school helped me out.
